Big ideas for small spaces

A small living space can be difficult to design: too much furniture and it’s cramped, but get it right and it can be stylish and cosy.

Skipton’s long established furniture and furnishings store, The Home Company, has some big ideas on how to make the most of those smaller rooms.

For an undersized dining or living room, try a more compact range of furniture, like the Grisedale Lite range. Made to smaller dimensions with slimmer timbers, it is ideal for smaller spaces and includes clever storage solutions such as the Grisedale Lite slim bookcase.

If the guest bedroom is more of a box room, try a sofa bed - just the job for an unexpected visitor. From the Dales collection, the Dales Snuggler is a comfortable sofa bed that can transform the whole room in an instant.

Linda Lee, the lifestyle store’s manager said:  “You can use furniture and furnishing to maximise and enhance the space you have available. If you keep the décor light and use neutral colours it can really open up a room.”

If a room is on the small side consider lighting, which can create the illusion of space. Try the Mother and Child floor lamp with uplighter and reading lamp, or the wire weave table lamp lit with sparkling fairy lights used to give a warm, even romantic ambience to a room.

Said Linda: “Small doesn’t mean losing any glamour. If you prefer bold colours, go for matching curtains and cushions or an elegant wall mirror to reflect the light and create a feeling of space.”
